The Canadian Philosophical Association
2022 Book Prize
In philosophy, books are one of the most important means for communicating the results of research; quite often, they represent the culmination of a significant achievement in the course of a philosophical investigation. The Canadian philosophical community is an important contributor, in both English and French, of high quality philosophical research with an international reputation that shows the remarkable dynamism of philosophical life in Canada.
The Canadian Philosophical Association wishes to have these contributions better known and, to this end, has instituted a book prize.
A Description of the PrizeThe Canadian Philosophical Association will award a maximum of three prizes for the best books in philosophy published by members of the Association. The amount of the prizes is determined by available resources.
EligibilityFor a book to be eligible for a prize, it must make a significant contribution to philosophical research.
Text-books, collections of articles by several authors, conference proceedings and translations, except if they are critical editions, are not eligible for a prize. If there is a question about the eligibility of a book, the Selection Committee will have the final say in the matter.
The book must be published in English or French between October 1, 2018 and October 1, 2021.
Digital editions are favored, but both print and digital editions are accepted .
The author of the book must be a member of the Canadian Philosophical Association for 2022 before the deadline of October 15, 2021. New members can join and existing members can renew their memberships for 2022 starting October 1st, 2021.
Date of SubmissionElectronic .pdf copies of the book must be submitted to the Executive Director of the Canadian Philosophical Association before October 15, 2021. A pdf copy of any information that can help the committee in reaching its decision, such as book reviews, critical notices, etc. should be included. The Selection Committee might require up to 6 print copies of the book if the need for this arises.
The material should be sent by email to the Executive Director of the Canadian Philosophical Association at administration@acpcpa.ca. Print submissions can be mailed to the Canadian Philosophical Association, PO Box 68 Toronto “P”, Toronto, ON M5S 2S6.

The Canadian Philosophical Association has four (4) awards available to distribute in 2020. The Canadian Philosophical Association is pleased to announce that Sophia Moreau’s Faces of Inequality: A Theory of Wrongful Discrimination (OUP, 2020) and Claude Panaccio’s Récit et reconstruction : Les fondements de la méthode en histoire de la philosophie (Vrin, 2019) are the winners of the 2022 CPA Book Prize. The triennial prize is awarded to the best books in philosophy published by members of the Association.
The CPA Book Prize Committee, chaired by 2021-22 Past President Christine Tappolet, received a record 36 nominations from publishers and from authors or their colleagues. The Committee noted the high quality of the nominated books.
Sophia Moreau is Professor of Law and Philosophy at the University of Toronto. Faces of Inequality defends an original theory of when and why discrimination wrongs people. A review noted, “The discussion is rich, clear and precise both in terms of more general principles and concrete cases …[C]ertain elements of her reflection strike me as really original contributions.”
Claude Panaccio is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Philosophy at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Récit et reconstruction explores the relevance of research in the history of philosophy on current philosophical debates. “This is a highly original book by one of most exciting Canadian historians of philosophy,” wrote one reviewer, calling it “the most unusual piece of philosophy I’ve read for a long time”.
The CPA thanks the Book Prize Committee, the referees, and everybody who submitted a nomination.
